The Federal Government establishes these benefits to level the playing field for small businesses.

Some set-asides are open to any small business, while others are open only to small businesses participating in SBA contracting assistance programs. SBA’s contracting assistance programs exist for certain socio-economic categories that are largely underrepresented (such as women-owned and service-disabled veterans).
